Neonatal Transport Team
Our Approach
Newborns are our most delicate patients they are even more fragile if they are born prematurely or with complex, life-threatening health problems. When these children need to get to Children's Hospital of Georgia, they must be moved with the utmost of care. Our neonatal transport team is able to bring the smallest, sickest babies from anywhere in the region, safely to CHOG. We are a designated tertiary hospital in East Central Georgia able to treat neonatal patients who require intensive, immediate care.
Caring for infants during transit requires special training. Our registered neonatal nurses and licensed respiratory therapists know how to monitor sick infants and provide continuous, life-saving care - all while en route to CHOG via ambulance, helicopter, or plane.
Why bring these infants to Children's Hospital of Georgia?
Doctors send their patients to CHOG because we provide services not offered anywhere else in the area. We have:
- A Level IV (the highest level) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- The region's only ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) technology to support the hearts and lungs of critically ill infants and specialist who are trained to use this equipment.
- The areas only comprehensive Pediatric Heart Program for children born with congenital heart defects.
Transport Care
Care begins as soon as the transport team picks up a patient. During the trip to CHOG, we are in continuous consultation with board-certified neonatologists. Our team is trained and ready to:
- Monitor EKG, blood pressure, respiration, oxygen saturation, and other invasive monitoring, as needed.
- Administer intramuscular, intraocular, endotracheal and intravenous medications and therapies.
- Offer management of artificial airways and ventilators and inhaled nitric oxide.
- Provide wound and skin management.

When critically ill infants need specialized care, we'll come to your hospital to pick up a patient and bring them to CHOG.
Call us if you have a newborn with:
- Congenital heart defects or cardiovascular anomalies
